New classic-style wood covered bridge incorporates video surveillance camera system from Moog Videolarm to protect travelers.

Admired for their beauty and sense of nostalgia, wood covered bridges have been captivating travelers for years. Once a popular construction type, with over 200 in Illinois, now only a handful of wood covered bridges remain in the state. The popular Red Covered Bridge of Princeton, IL, rightfully named for its rustic red color, continues to attract artists, photographers and others to its inspiring design. In an effort to draw travelers, Bureau County officials in Princeton, IL recently constructed a new wood-covered bridge just one mile west of the city. This new bridge, named Captain Swift, embodies a look similar to the famous Red Covered Bridge.

After its construction, the new two-lane (28’ wide and 16’ high) Captain Swift bridge began to experience heavy traffic from local traffic and tourists. Concerned with the bridge’s remote location and increased traffic volume, county officials quickly agreed to the need for adding security to monitor travelers on the new bridge. After reviewing several surveillance options, a video-surveillance system proved to be the most cost-effective and ideal solution.

After researching several video surveillance possibilities, state design engineer Clark Ditez developed an optimal video system which includes the technologically advanced products of Moog Videolarm.

The factors behind Ditez's decision to include Moog Videolarm's AP8C-9: Pressurized Outdoor Environment Camera System into the Captain Swift bridge project include:

  • Fully pressurized fixed camera housing with an IP67 rating for the prevention of water and dust.  This added protection will minimize costly repairs to the camera system
  • Vandal-resistant cast aluminum tubular housing design
  • 23x zoom true day/night camera for optimal video quality
  • Moog Videolarm's outstanding customer service reputation
  • Industry leading warranty on Moog Videolarm products

Ficek Electric and Communications Systems, a system installer in the Illinois Valley area, were awarded the project. Ficek Electric was selected as a result of their commitment to meeting their customer’s needs and their knowledgeable and experienced sales/installation team.

"We were impressed with the Moog Videolarm pressurized camera system," commented Mike Trench, project manager, Ficek Electric. "Their technical support staff proved to be a tremendous help in assisting our team in the installation of the camera systems."

Since the adoption of the Moog Videolarm surveillance system to the Captain Swift bridge, Bureau County has already arrested a reckless driver who was endangering travelers.
